ACADEMIC ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS

BLOSSOM

UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIA | '17

STUDIO: MARION WEISS

PARTNERS: YISHA LI, PINGLE LI

The layout of this performance arts and cultural center is inspired by the form of a flower. Four monumental staircases lead to a shared "core" where students and visitors gather to rest and eat. The 4 “petals” divide the campus by program, and the tips of each petal act as roofs for semi-outdoor performance spaces.

BLACK BOX THEATER

UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIA | '16

STUDIO: GEORGINA HULJICH

PARTNER: RUIYI CHEN

The sharp, oblique lines and patterns that compose this Black Box Theater give it a very distinguished and commanding presence. Unlike most rectilinear stages, this stage has a jagged edge, which blurs the boundary between the audience and performer. Similarly, parts of the balcony also extend out to emphasize this "push and pull" effect.

In addition to a theater, the "black box" contains an extensive library, cafe, 2-story lobby, outdoor party space and gallery.

MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK

UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIA | '15

STUDIO: BEN KRONE

PARTNER: HAOSHENG YU

A simple, origami-like component is multiplied and aggregated to create this colossal Mountain Bike Park. Through a prefabricated, additive method, the bike park grows to contains an interweaving system of retail shops, accessible roofs, pedestrian and bike pathways.

Using the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (Brooklyn-Queens Expressway) as its mountain peak, this design provides a new solution to the urban dilemma of fitness, clean transportation, and green space. One could describe it as

the vertical, stacked version of the High Line.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIA | '17

STUDIO: MARION WEISS

PARTNERS: YISHA LI, PINGLE LI

The Sydney Opera House was a major inspiration in the "Blossom" project. We created an accurate section-model based on old drawings, and diagrams to depict what we viewed as key elements and "takeaways."

We applied these lessons (iconic silhouettes, shell structures, monumental staircases, etc.) from the case study to our new design.

The model and diagrams were displayed at the famous Venice Biennale in the "Lines of Movement" installation.

URBAN GROTTO

UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIA | '16

Urban Grotto is an eco-friendly residential complex and agriculture center. Grotto-like cut-outs on the ground level provide wide and welcoming entrances. The rice-terrace formation creates generous farming and social gathering spaces, and vertical green walls provide beauty and air purification.

SWAN LAKE

UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIA | '17

This sculptural performance arts center is a modern interpretation of the elegant mountain shapes that surround it.

HARBOR VIEWS

UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIA | '15

STUDIO: BEN KRONE

PARTNER: HAOSHENG YU

When viewed from afar, this structure is an iconic new landmark on NYC's harbor. From within, it becomes a multi-level, 360 degree observation deck.

The pedestrian and bike pathways that wrap around the structure grant visitors a magical experience as they slowly descend amidst unparalleled views of the city.

TINY LIVING

UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIA | '17

STUDIO: CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

In this assignment, I modeled, then dissembled 2 existing IKEA furniture items to create an entirely new design. Every dissembled piece was accounted for and recycled in the new design.
